EDITH KONECKY

Edith Konecky, despite a small body of work, can lay claim to a large literary achievement with ALLEGRA MAUD GOLDMAN (1976), a coming-of-age novel that chronicles the growth of a young female artist. In brilliantly comic, deceptively simple vignettes, Konecky depicts the world of a nouveau riche Jewish American family in the early part of the 20th century. Originally published by Harper & Row, then Dell, it is still in print, currently with The Feminist Press, with an introduction by Tillie Olsen who sees the novel as "one of the few books that prove to be a timeless delight for all ages," and cites its "charm" and "wit." It has been enthusiastically and widely reviewed, its chapters frequently anthologized

In her second novel, A PLACE AT THE TABLE, Konecky explores similar territory through the eyes of an older, more experienced heroine, Rachel.
San Francisco Chronicle "A small gem of a novel... A wise, lively, honest and well-written story."
Houston Chronicle "This is a book about friendship...perceptive, funny, and deliciously complex..."
The West Coast Review of Books "It is Konecky's honesty and humor, her wit and wisdom that make this novel a superior and memorable reading event."
Library Journal "An entertaining novel...a funny, lively look at the upheavals that seem to be increasingly unavoidable rites of passage for all of us."
